Australasian User Interface Conference
The Australasian User Interface Conference (AUIC) is the forum for user interface researchers and practitioners at the Australasian Computer Science Week (ACSW 2010). AUIC provides an opportunity for workers in the areas of HCI, CSCW, and pervasive computing to meet with colleagues and with others in the broader computer science community. NZ Open Government Data BarCamp
The New Zealand Open Government Data BarCamp is an "unconference" for people who are interested in making government-held data more freely available for others to re-use. An "unconference" is an alternative participant-driven event, that avoids aspects of a conventional conference, such as high fees and sponsored presentations.
Web 2.0 developments have shown the potential of combining data from different sources made freely available on the Internet. The government holds a huge range of non-personal data which could form the basis of innovative services and applications by others on the Internet.
You should come if you are interested in government information policy, explore ways to provide data, making entrepreneurial use of the Internet, or building working applications during a weekend.
And, as has been pointed out, " It would be great to have some UX people there, for the hackfest too (we could do some user research, wireframe things, do usability bits & pieces on apps which are created on the day, dream up apps...)”

ICAT 2005 and MUM 2005
The HIT Lab NZ is organizing the ICAT 2005 and MUM 2005 conferences in the second week of December (Dec 5th - 10th). These are both leading international conferences and allow you the opportunity to see world class research in the field of Virtual Reality, 3D interfaces and mobile multimedia technology.
On December 5th - 8th, there is the International Conference on Augmented Telexistence (ICAT 2005). ICAT 2005 is the oldest conference on Virtual Reality, running for 15 years. In addition to Virtual Reality, papers will be offered on 3D user interfaces, haptic and tacitile input and telepresence. There are a number of outstanding international speakers and tutorials on topics such as projection displays and 3D user interface design. Keynote speechs will be given by Oliver Bimber who is doing some remarkable research on 3D stereo projecton and Adrian Cheok who is an expert on next generation entertainment technology.

On December 8th - 10th, there is the Conference on Mobile Ubiquitous Multimedia (MUM 2005). This is the leading conference on mobile multimedia applications, including games on mobile phones, user interfaces for PDAs and mobile phones, and mobile networking. For people interested in mobile devices this is the ideal conference. The keynote speaker will be Jani Karlsson, the Nokia N-Gage product manager, who will speak about trends in mobile phone gaming.
